Europeans again calling 911. Putin picks up the phone – again
Here we go again. So, how Europe can start gaining more geopolitical agency, power and authority – in order to get its place at the table of Russians and Americans for the starters?
Is Calling Putin the Right Step?
Here we go again. So, how Europe can start gaining more geopolitical agency, power and authority – in order to get its place at the table of Russians and Americans for the starters?
Is calling Vladimir Putin on phone the right step in that direction?
The Songs We Have Heard a Billion Times
Norwegian prime minister Jonas Gahr Støre and president of Finland Alexander Stubb, it appears, are thinking, that the answer to that question is „yes".
And they just did it.
There's growing choir of voices of support for them from all over the continent.
Main songs of that choir are those, that we've heard billion times already.
“Diplomacy is better than war and it is the only way forward and out. You must engage in diplomacy even in the situation of the fiercest standoff. Russia can't be defeated neither by Ukraine, nor by Europe and even not by both. We have to deliver our position directly to the regime's ears. We have to be also the part of the process, not letting Russia and US to sort the things out without us, on their own. Americans and Russians anyway are moving forward with bilateral bussiness plans. One way or another, we will have to live besides Russia, no matter how the war in Ukraine ends".
And so on and of that kind.
Defending the Move From Criticism
The majority of these things were voiced by Norwegian and Finnish leaders themselves, defending their move from criticism. They dismissed the criticism, that they have done this on their own, without even informing in advance all of the European Union (EU) or at least, their neighbors in the region. That was the accusation, expressed by the Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen.
Some other leaders of the EU also urged to maintain unity and hold the line, not to engage in separatism.
The main defenders of the diplomacy and keep talking approach are adding, that Russia itself now shows more interest to talk to Europeans, isn't dismissing them so bluntly, as earlier. Highest people in the Kremlin are publicly stating, that Russia has to take Europe into account, because both sides will have to live and deal with each other no matter what.
And, allegedly, US is more welcoming Europeans into the process, which this time started to appear unprecedentedly ‘’real".
The Signs of Seriousness
US, using intelligence data and ‘’Starlink’’ connection as tools of the blackmail, forced Ukraine into stopping strikes on Russian oil industry infrastructure – at least, for the meantime.
Zelensky, echoing old Russian ultimatums to NATO to withdraw into positions of the year 1997, stated, that he's also ready to talk about Russia's ‘’security guarantees". That's really unprecedented thing.
Russians kind of agreed to cease fire around Oleshky – the Ukrainian city, where people, trapped in Russian occupation and heavy fighting in the area, are dying from hunger.
Of course, the story of personal involvement of the US first lady, which was personally requested by Putin himself is the fairytale for the birds and propagandist gilding of Trump's family PR and ego.
But the wishful eyes see the signs of “seriousness” of the situation even in the repeated Russian claims that they need “new security architecture" in the region, Europe and in the whole world, looking forward to the trilateral meeting of Russian and Chinese dictators with US president.
Not an Elephant, but a Trojan Horse
So, here comes up the question, which was already for some time standing in the room – if not like an elephant, then like a horse. Trojan horse, to be more specific.
Will the ages-old crowd of “realists” – or, to put it simply, defeatists – break the European unity and geopolitical subjectivity before they're born?
Will this crowd start openly forcing and urging Europe to re-legitimize Russian regime, agree at least with “the part" of its “concerns" – for the sake of the holy “diplomacy", which is the only one alternative to “escalation” and war?
Will it start to urge to drop the dreams about “real European subjectivity” and to adjust itself to the “reality" of being the playground of secondary importance for the global powers of the first league – including Russia?
Of course it will. It is only the matter of time, when well see, if it is stronger, than that part of the societies and the political elites, who are still in along the lines of engaging with Russia only from behind the Ukrainian frontline.
This crowd is way much bigger, than this of Fico, Orban or Le Pen. We still can't see its real size just because the significant part of it is hiding in sleeper cells, waiting for their time. And they're among those, who are now repeating the mantras about the “unity", “agency" and “ironclad firmness of position towards Russia and its authoritarian allies”.
Are Norwegian prime minister and Finnish president the ones from that crowd? Most probably and hopefully – no.
But they're clearly playing into its hands.
Far more important fact -- they're playing into the hands of Russians. And Americans, needless to say.
What Russians See in the Call
There things they were saying to Putin or Putin say saying to them as the content of the conversation are absolutely of no significance. The crucial thing is the very fact of the call.
Russians see it and understand it in only one way – the front of the enemies, which was never very solid, is starting to crack, because some deserters are ready to give in.
“We outlasted them!”, -- that’s not only internal understanding of the regime, but also the triumphant message it is already transmitting to the world, praising “the realism and acceptance of the reality", which again returned to some European minds.
And it is crystal clear, that regime is absolutely not going to start at least minimal and real engagement with the Europeans, to let them take a seat behind the table of Russians and Americans.
Kremlin started and will keep this game, imitation and manipulation solely for the one purpose – to deepen the rift in the European house, which is trying to put itself together, weakening it even more with this. And, of course, polishing the way to power for such agents, as Le Pen, or other “alternatives" in the European countries.
Of course, Russians are doing this with full endorsement from the current US administration side, where people are looking to Europe the same way.
The crucial thing is the very fact of the call.
The One and Only Way to the Main Table
So, the one and only way to get to the “main table" in the ballroom for Europe has absolutely nothing to do with the phone calls to the Kremlin.
The one and only case Russians and Americans would be forced to accept Europeans around the table, would be the reality, that Ukraine, with the essentially stepped up support of Europe, not only withstands and survives the winter avoiding the brink of collapse, but also manages at last stabilize and dig in the frontline and defend the skies significantly more, than now.
And, of course, if Europe at last managed to implement such sanction policy, which would be not only very clearly aimed at the destruction of Russian economy and social system, but also really effective.
Unless these things are in place, nothing will change in Russia's or its allies behavior. Also, in US behavior.
The tragic part is, that we, obviously, are not going to see these changes at least in the foreseeable future.
The Adversaries Will Fail Again
On the other hand, the adversaries also will fail in their calculations and actions – again.
Russia will be destroying Ukraine and pushing on the frontlines at the same pace or even more desperately, than now.
Also, Kremlin will be stepping up the terrorist agression all over in the region – especially in Baltic countries, Poland, Germany.
The main results of the midterms in US will be political chaos, paralysis of the parliament and the dead end of the standoff of the Hill and the White House.
The White House will continue to drown in the swamp of the Middle East, where the demons of war will continue to live their own lives, despite the results of the Israel elections or the political changes in any country of the region.
Also, we will see other trajectories of the US decline, as the main global power.
But will some other power take this place? No need to guess – China?
But there's something in the posture and the nature of this oversized and looking invincible regime, which encourages to say – no. The regime and all the country might be weaker, than it seems and closer to their zone of historical turbulence, than many might predict. And if it enters its own existential crisis – especially, after the failed blitzkrieg in Taiwan – we will have the worldwide upheaval of the levels beyond any imagination.
And Russia, for sure, won’t be able to break the Ukrainian defenses on the frontlines and the country itself – even with the help of America, depriving Ukraine from the last lifelines and Europe still being unable and unwilling to fill in the financial and military gaps.
The New World Disorder
So, after this winter we will have Ukraine even more destroyed, but still standing and leaving all those behind the main table in their parallel world of “big deals" and “zones of influence”.
But the worst part again will be the European strategic disorientation on the slippery slope and further sliding to the dark zone of the political turbulence.
That’s the new world disorder we're all entering now. And even Putin on the other end of the phone cable can't help – he's also the passenger of the same train with no return.
